9th -12th grade Charlotte Mason Style

Linked to this page is the curriculum plan we have used and intend to complete in our homeschool. (Our oldest will graduate in June of 2004.) We expect we will make adjustments in it for our younger children and their individual needs, but it shows our basic goals in homeschooling our children, and what we hope they will have completed by the time theygraduate.

We share it as a means of encouragement and in the hopes that others will be inspired by it. We believe it contains many helpful resources, and that it can be used as a springboard to personally-tailored high school plans for other families.

A book a week and a rhyme a week!

BRAVO for this site! You can practically school your prek/kindergartner for free! The book a week and rhyme a week hardly have you leaving this site! I can't! :o)

A-Book-A-Week instruction makes use of the 101 Best Books that have been purchased for the Head Start home-school library. Each month, four of the books from the library are highlighted. These books have been selected based on common themes found in preschools -- holidays, colors, and counting. We have also highlighted books that especially support phonological awareness.

Our downloadable instruction for each book comes in the form of 4 activity cards, one for each of the categories we believe to be important in children's development of literacy:

If "an apple a day will keep the doctor away", then perhaps a-rhyme-a-week will keep school failure at bay. WIL's A-Rhyme-a-Week phonological awareness program features 30 different nursery rhymes. The phonograms or "rimes" emphasized in our program were first identified by Richard Wylie and Donald Durrell in 1970. Examining a list of 1, 437 words commonly spoken by children in primary grades (Murphy, 1957), Wylie and Durrell identified 37 rimes that accounted for almost 500 words of Murphy's list. In determining the order of rhymes and rimes to present each week, we are following Fry's (1998) suggested consideration of frequency.

A Prairie Home

History Notebooks:
When we first started our history notebooks, I was *convinced* that we needed to study history together and in chronological order. We started out with elaborate history notebooks when we were doing those unit study-type lessons. We soon abandoned those for our Bible Notebooks (where we spend the majority of our time studying) and a simple timeline notebook. We no longer study history together nor in chronological order! (See Education and Spirit-Led Home Education) Now when someone wants to add a person or event they've just learned about to their history timeline notebook, they do it on their own. Each person *owns* the information in their notebooks because I'm not dictating the contents of the notebook.

Instructions for a simple history timeline book:
It is very easy to create a simple timeline notebook using "History Through the Ages" timeline figures. (See pictures and list of historical figures included in each set.) Fill your 3-ring notebook with pages of cardstock. You can use different colors for different time periods. Each two page spread represents 1 century. Label the top of the page with the date: 1900AD for example. Label a page for creation. Add figures to the appropriate pages and when a page is full (front and back), just create a new page and slip it in the appropriate spot in the notebook.

Analytical Grammar

Are you tired of teaching grammar year after year? Do your kids never seem to achieve a sense of mastery over this material? If your child has been doing grammar worksheets forever - and still doesn't feel a sense of mastery - the material is not being presented properly!

Analytical Grammar is a new approach.

The grammar of our language is actually a rather small and tidy body of knowledge. It has a beginning and an end, and it shouldn't take forever to learn. It is already in our heads and has been since we were small children. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to put sentences together! The trick is to help the student access the knowledge already in their head and organize it in a useful and comprehensive manner.

The average student, using Analytical Grammar, will be able to achieve a mastery of not only grammar but also punctuation and usage in just 34 weeks

Annenberg Learner

Medium aevum -- Medieval or The Middle Ages. We think of knights in shining armor, lavish banquets, wandering minstrels, kings, queens, bishops, monks, pilgrims, and glorious pageantry.
In film and in literature, medieval life seems heroic, entertaining, and romantic. In reality, life in the Middle Ages, a period that extended from approximately the fifth century to the fifteenth century in Western Europe, was sometimes all these things, as well as harsh, uncertain, and often dangerous.

Astronomy - Grade Levels 1st to 4th.

Exploring Creation with Astronomy was written by Jeannie K. Fulbright and is definetly one of our favorites for the elementary grades. It uses the Charlotte Mason method of teaching by using narration and notebooking.

It can certainly be used, if read by the parent for the lower elementary grades, but can be read, as Apologia claims by a child with a 4th grade reading level.

Both the Apologia general website and Jeannie Fulbright's personal website have free notebook pages to download to enhance your study of this book. You can visit Jeannie Fulbright's website at www.jeanniefulbright.com.

The book is written to give glory and credit to the Creator along with beautiful pictures of high quality to capture your child's interest and hold it.

I highly recommend this book for this grade level.

The Burton Farmers Gin represents the turn of the century revolution of cotton ginning from a labor intensive operation to the system gin which was powered by a single engine. It represents a mechanical age before the industrial use of power, and is the oldest surviving example of Robert Munger's concept of an integrated system of processing cotton from the wagon to a completed bale. Built in 1914.

Butter Making

- Heavy whipping cream
-dash of salt
-baby food jar w/ tight-fitting lid
-LOTSA shaking!

We've never tried putting the marble in the jar, but I've heard it does help. (If we had to wait to make butter to look for a marble, we'd be butterless!)

One tip from experience:
When pouring the cream into the jar, regardless of size, try not to fill more than half full. That will leave enough open space for the cream to bounce around. Once it has separated and you have a solid chunk of butter and the thinner liquid (whey?), you'll need a spare cup/bucket/jar/sink to drain away the leftover liquid.

Hope this helps! I'm no expert, but this is something we do a lot just for fun. I like 'spreadable' butter with bread or toast and this always seems to come out to just the right temperature and texture. Plus, dd thinks we are so cool to make our own butter.

Calvert School

10713 Gilroy Road, Suite B
Hunt Valley MD  21031
1.888.487.4652
inquiry@calvertservice.org

Hands down this is our favorite secular boxed curriculum! They offer Prek to 8th grade.

Even though Calvert doesn't make this claim, their lesson manual is a wonderful example of what a lesson manual should like for newbie and veteran homeschoolers alike.

Each subject, unlike other boxed curriculums are planned out by Calvert School teachers.

In our opinion there is a difference between a curriculum provider only and an educator. For example, some boxed curriculum providers simply put together different resources in each subject area and conveniently package it for you.

Then some, very few, like Calvert School are educators. They might pull textbooks and workbooks from other providers, but the big difference is that the teaching and lesson planning is based on the many years that Calvert School has served the homeschooling community.

Because of Calvert's fine and prestigious reputation, it is not equal with other boxed curriculums in our opinion. For example, you cannot buy any course or subject separately except for their math and optional or enrichment subjects.

We have to put Calvert School in our secular resource section because it does use secular textbooks. However, do not be put off by this if you are looking for a Christian flavor source.

Calvert School's curriculum does introduce some ancient Bible history alongside introducing evolution as a theory. We have found that Calvert School respects the right of the parent to choose content and lets you know ahead, at times, if they feel something might be objectionable to a Christian view.

We have found it completely tweakable to add our Christian beliefs or faith. At certain times in our homeschooling journey, we have chose it over other Christian based curriculum because of its rigorous academics.

Calvert goes to great lengths to be sure that the homeschooling children feel connected to the children in their elite day school in Maryland. They offer a networking program, pen pal program, textbook exchange and their newsletter Calvert Connection.

Bravo to Calvert School!

Debra Bell

Take a look at her on-line classes for English.

Hey there! Thanks for checking out our little corner
of cyberspace. I'm delighted to share a bit of our homeschool journey together.
Thought you might want to know a bit about who's
behind the "wit and wisdom" column so, first, here's the stuff that I guess makes me credible:

I used to teach high school and college English in traditional settings - from that you can figure I have a few degrees and professional credentials. About twelve years ago, though, friends of mine without degrees or teaching experience started to homeschool and got better results than I did in the classroom, so I paddled my boat into their stream.

I wrote all about this and more in the Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling, published by Thomas Nelson - that turned out to be an award-winning best-seller. The book made our lives very exciting, but a lot busier as well.

I also like to start things, including The Home School Resource Center. This is our family business that have been serving the homeschool community the past 15 years.
In addition I teach English at CHESS (Creative Home Educators Support Services) family school and I also oversee the Learning Center homeschool co-op. You can read more about these co-operative efforts in some of my columns.

Explorer Team's Pop-Up Books for Children

Pop-up books are books a category called movable books. These are books that change form when the reader performs an action such as opening the book to create a pop-up, pulling tabs and lifting flaps to reveal pictures and information, or rotating wheels and other techniques that enhance the experience of the book.

The first movable books, which appeared in the 15th and 16th centuries, were used for astronomical, scientific and medical reasons. Later, in the middle of the 19th century, the techniques of movable books were applied to books for children.

The artists who create pop-up books are called paper engineers. They make use of the principle of the energy created by movement, kinetic energy.

A staple of reading instruction classes, the Fry readability formula allows you to estimate the reading level of a piece of writing by counting words, syllables, and sentences. This is really better for an older reader, not one under 6 years old.

Also, she list sites that you can search leveled readers on to get an idea of where your child is.

1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp ginger
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
1 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1.25 cups unsulphured molasses
2 eggs, beaten

preheat oven to 375. Mix flour, soda, & spices. Melt shortening in pan. cool slightly. Add sugar, molasses & eggs. Mix well. Add four cups dry ingredients & mix well.

Turn the mixture onto lightly floured surface. Kneed in remaining dry ingredients by hand. Add a little more flour if necessary to make firm dough. Roll to about 1/4" and cutout the shape you want.

Good luck!

Growing with Grammar

My name is Tamela Davis, and I am a homeschooling mother of two. For several years, I have been aware that homeschoolers around the world are in need of a thorough grammar program that can be used by all educators regardless of their background or beliefs. My husband and I began Growing With Grammar to fill
that need in the homeschool community.

We have designed this thorough program to be user-friendly for both teacher and student by separating the subject matter into two books, the Student Manual and the Student Workbook (which includes a separate Answer Key). The Student Manual contains the learning portion of the subject matter, and the Student
Workbook contains the hands-on portion, which reinforces the lessons taught in the Student Manual. If desired, independent learners can work alone by utilizing the Student Manual and Student Workbook, since the Answer Key is separate. To support each concept learned in the Student Manual, there is a
corresponding workbook lesson. Review questions are integrated within each workbook lesson to constantly provide reinforcement of previous lessons learned. In addition, there are separate review lessons at the end of each chapter. Also, we have chosen to bind the books with spiral bindings to ensure that the books lie flat
when open. The spiral binding on the Student Workbook is at the top to provide equal unobstructed access for right- and left-handed students.

We started the program with the third grade level, since that seems to be the age group when most parents desire to introduce a formal grammar education. Grade 4 is now available!!!!! I will be writing subsequent grade levels over the next few years. We will definitely stay ahead of the curve by publishing at least one new
volume per year.

Hands and Heart Educational Coloring Books

Why use educational coloring books in your home education?

~They allow younger children to participate in an age-appropriate activity that pertains to the subject your family is studying. It keeps them busy and helps them feel involved.

~Educational coloring books with text on the pages make great overviews of the subject at hand. We have used each page in a coloring book as a point in an outline. We use other books and resources to fill in each subject covered in the coloring book. This can help add structure to the study of a topic about which you are unfamiliar.
~Many (most) children need to move and do things. Having a coloring page to color while mom reads out loud will often help the children absorb the material better, since they are seeing, hearing, and doing.
~It can be hard to find just the right picture to make a notebook page, lapbook, mini book, etc. Reproducible coloring books are a wonderful source for that kind of picture. You can even enlarge our reduce the picture to fit your needs.
~The intense concentration to detail that occurs when a child is coloring an educational picture really helps the child to remember and absorb the information.
~ Nature or science related coloring books can be a tremendous help when compiling a nature notebook. Children who prefer not to draw can color and glue in pictures, and young artists can creat a sketch using the coloring page as a reference.

Hands n Hearts

We offer wonderful books, great notebooking supplies, and, of course, our very own Hands and Hearts History Discovery Kits!

Hewitt Homeschooling Resources

Hewitt offers a Balanced, Flexible and Complete
Approach to Homeschooling . . .

By Balancing Character, Academics, Work, and Service.
Academics are important, but they are only one important aspect of your children's education. Strong moral character, self-discipline, and good manners will produce a person others enjoy being with. A strong work ethic can turn a child into a motivated entrepreneur or desirable employee. In these areas, help your children learn how to balance life's responsibilities now.

By Encouraging Home School, Not School at Home.
Real learning often requires hands-on involvement. Do your students read, discuss, and act upon what they've learned, or read and study only to take a test? Are they exposed to great literature or dull textbooks? Is science accompanied by nature walks and hands-on activities? Use multi grade level products such as Beautiful Feet history to teach most of your children together, working on specific grade levels in only math and language. Many parents switch to Hewitt because they have been burned out by an overly structured academic curriculum. There should be structure, but it should not stifle the desire to learn. If you and your children are not enjoying your homeschooling, some changes are in order.

Hoagies Gifted

Hoagies' Gifted Education Page
This is a great resource site for those with Gifted and Talented kids.

Former U. S. Commissioner of Education Sidney P. Marland, Jr., in his August 1971 report to Congress, stated:
Gifted and talented children are those identified by professionally qualified persons who by virtue of outstanding abilities are capable of high performance. These are children who require differentiated educational programs and/or services beyond those normally provided by the regular school program in order to realize their contribution to self and society.

From Identification and Testing and Assessment, to Gifted Programs and Curriculum Modifications, from Young Children and Early (or Late) Kindergarten through Adolescents to Gifted Adults, Hoagies' Gifted Education Page has information for you.

Home School Family Fitness Institute

Home School Physical Education.
Few home educators include physical education in their curriculum. Most home educators do not have a lot of free time and only include the subjects they view as essential. A parent may value physical education but has not been able to find a tool or curriculum guide to tell them how to do it. To put energy into physical education, you must be convinced it is as important as math or any other basic subject.

How Do Leaves Change?

How do Leaves Change?

Materials:
green leaves (note to you: try to find some leaves that you know change color in the fall, like some red and yellows).

baby food jar
rubbing alcohol
coffee filter

Caution: Do not put the rubbing alcohol on or near your face. Do not drink it or put it in your mouth!

Procedure:

Ask your child, what color are leaves? They will probably say green.

1. Tear up the leaves and put them in the jar.

2. Pour some rubbing alcohol into the jar, just enough to cover the leaves. Be Careful!!

3. Cut a retangular piece out of the coffee filter, about 1 in x 4 inches. (I had to cut mine a little longer because my jar was a little bigger).

4. Place the piece of filter paper with one end in the rubbing alcohol and the rest lying outside the jar. Tape it if you need to.

5. Let this sit for about 10 minutes. Do not move it around.

Observations:

Answer the following questions:
What happened to the green color in the rubbing alcohol?
What happened when you put the filter paper into the rubbing alcohol?
What have you learned about the colors in leaves?

Note: What happens is the "true" color of the leaves comes out on the filter. If the leaves you picked normally turn red in the fall, then red will come out. This shows that the green we see in leaves is the chlorphyll when they are making their food. The real color is the color in fall.

How to divide the data in lapbooks

There is a lapbooking craze in homeschooling today, they are quite "in vogue" all over the internet. The idea is based upon the work of Dinah Zike. Many moms will surf the net and view lapbook pictures, then rush off to buy Dinah's books, but then they get stuck.

Here she has laid out 5 steps to help you organize the data that you receive. Excellent tips on how to get the most out of Dinah Zike's books!

Living Literature with Lap Book Learning

What is a lap book?
A lap book is basically an educational learning tool made from a folder and meant to take the place of worksheets.

"Lap book" is a term being trademarked by Tobin's Lab. It is the most common term used to refer to these educational mediums. They are also referred to as shutterbooks, graphic organizers, fold books, presentation books, flap books, and project books.

Are lap books hard to make?
Not at all! They are as simple as you want them to be or as complicated as you want them to be. The finished project is completely up to the student.

How is a lap book made?
Simply by taking a folder and opening it on a flat surface. Fold the two taps inward until they meet in the center of the folder forming a window "shutter" effect.

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis). The project includes dissemination and extensive internal and external evaluation.

Learning and understanding mathematics, at every level, requires student engagement. Mathematics is not, as has been said, a spectator sport. Too much of current instruction fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of manipulatives, physical objects that help students visualize relationships and applications. We can now use computers to create virtual learning environments to address the same goals.

There is a need for good computer-based mathematical manipulatives and interactive learning tools at elementary and middle school levels. Our Utah State University team is building Java-based mathematical tools and editors that allow us to create exciting new approaches to interactive mathematical instruction. The use of Java as a programming language provides platform independence and web-based accessibility.

The NLVM is a resource from which teachers may freely draw to enrich their mathematics classrooms. The materials are also of importance for the mathematical training of both in-service and pre-service teachers. The library is actively being extended and refined through projects including the eNLVM, a project to develop interactive online learning units for mathematics.

Pizza Hut Book It!

PO Box 2999
Wichita KS  67201

Extensive research has proven that reading aloud to a child is the single most important factor in raising a reader. Children who are read to on a regular basis show more interest in books and learning to read. Looking at the pictures, hearing and seeing the words, and then talking about what happens in the story gives pre-readers the tools they need to develop into independent readers.

BOOK IT! Beginners is an eight-week program that encourages teachers to read aloud to young children in preschool and pre-kindergarten so that they'll develop a love of books and reading at an early age.

Program dates 10/1/06 - 3/31/07 -- enrollment deadline 6/9/06

Preschoolers and Peace

Homeschooling with preschoolers at your side may be the most challenging thing you've ever faced. It is my hope that you will find encouragement, practical ideas, and resources here. Truly, when God calls us to a task He provides everything we need to accomplish His goals..."And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Phillippians 4:19

When our oldest child was 4 years old, we began to educate him at home. At the time we also had a 2-year-old and a newborn. Now, 9 years later, our children are 13, 11, and 8-year-old boys, as well as 6, 5, and 2-year-old girls. I have never known what it is to homeschool without the presence of preschoolers.

If you are new to homeschooling with preschoolers, this site is especially for you.

Pretzel Recipe

Prep time: about 30 minutes

Ingredients:
* 1 tbsp. yeast
* 1/2 c. warm water
* 1 tsp. honey
* 1 1/3 c. flour
* 1 tsp. salt
Utensils:
* oven (You'll need help from your adult assistant.)
* small bowl
* mixing spoon
* medium-size bowl
* cutting board, sprinkled with flour
* baking sheet, sprayed with nonstick spray
* measuring cups and spoons
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 degrees Celsius).
2. Put the yeast in a small bowl with the water and honey. Stir a little, then let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
3. Mix the flour and salt together in a medium-size bowl.
4. After the 5 minutes is up, check on the yeast mixture. It should be bigger than before and a little bubbly. Add this mixture to the flour and salt mixture.
5. Stir everything together. Use a spoon to start. Finish with your hands. The dough is ready when it's still a little crumbly and flaky.
6. Put the dough on the cutting board and knead it like you are playing with clay. Knead it into one big ball.
7. Break off a piece of dough that's about the size of a big gumball or superball. Use your hands to roll it into a skinny snake.
8. Twist the snake into a medium-size pretzel shape, and put it on the cookie sheet. Do this with all the dough, making 12 pretzels.
9. Bake your pretzels for 10 minutes. Let them cool and take a bite!

Ready Made Word Games

What a wonderful site to create that EXACT game you need for your learning needs and using the Avery ready templates!

Here are their suggestions for use:

To play most of the games listed below players will need tokens, die, and question cards. Questions read orally by the teacher can be used to replace the question cards. The basic premise for using the games listed below is as follows:

1. Player rolls die or spins to determine number of moves (a Printable Spinner, Large Dice, and Small Dice are available for download).
2. Player does not move until he answers the question on the game card drawn.
3. Player is then given a question either orally or from printed card. Questions could include vocabulary, spelling, science, social studies, or Word Wall words. A good source for questions can be found at Quia (http://www.quia.com/web). Using Internet Explorer, questions found online can be copied and pasted on the game cards.
4. These cards can be created in Word using the Game Card Template. The game cards can be printed on Avery Business Cards #5376 which can be folded and separated for use. A template is also available for Avery Business Card 8371, Avery Business Card 27881,and Avery 5371. Several cards have been created and can be found at this website.

These are the lists Regena is often asked to share on The Well Trained Mind message boards.

These are all Word files.
From Regena:
I often post in response to the particular need(s) of a person or persons at a particular point in time. As I send out my lists, I often add/delete information from them to make them fit the specific request of particular people.

You'll see as you go through them that they vary greatly in style, and again, that's because they were initially done with some specific project in mind for someone.

Rod and Staff

Rod and Staff does not have a website but you can buy directly from them or through this link.

Rod and Staff is one of our very favorite curriculum providers. We find that their math and grammar or English as they call it are solid and rigorous.

They provide curriculum through the 10th grade.

Take a look.

Rod and Staff Publishers, Inc.

P. O. Box 3, 14193 Hwy. 172
Crockett KY  41413
606.522.4348

Rod & Staff Publishers is one of our very favorite curriculums with Bible based textbooks. They offer curriculum from grade levels Prek to 10th grade.

Their catalog is free in addition to curriculum sample books. Samples are available at this time for only Grades 1-6.

The grammar books for 2nd through 4th grade are called Building Christian English Series with the following names:

2nd grade - Preparing to Build
3rd grade - Beginning Wisely
4th grade - Building with Diligence

The concepts covered with their Building Christian English Series are oral communication, parts of speech, words, the sentence, capitalization, punctuation, types of writings and using helps (reference books).

Rod & Staff does not have a formal grammar program for first grade. We have listed other resources for beginning grammar if you want to start with first grade.

Some of the many things we particularly like about Rod & Staff is their bargain pricing, lesson manuals, and hardback non consumable books.

Did we mention their gentle Christian flavor?

Having multiple children and trying to stay in a budget, it becomes very important to make practical choices in choosing books. With Rod & Staff the child simply does his work on his own note book paper or pad of choice and his hardback book is saved for the next child.

Their lesson manuals, even though not written to the homeschooler, have a mini page of the students page with complete answers.

Too, their lesson manuals are scripted for the newbie and veteran alike. Sometimes as veterans we too would like a break one year in our school year.

Rod & Staff is an excellent choice in hand holding or to simply take the worry out of scheduling your school day.

Rod and Staff does not have a website. You can simply call them or fax them.

Their fax number is 800.643.1244.

Science NetLinks

The MarcoPolo partnership provides free, Internet-based content across academic disciplines. Science NetLinks' role is to provide a wealth of standards-based resources for K-12 science educators, including lesson plans, interactives and reviewed Internet resources. Science NetLinks is a dynamic site with new content being added on a regular basis, so check back often.

Site Features

Lessons

At the heart of Science NetLinks are standards-based lesson plans that incorporate reviewed Internet resources, and can be selected according to specific benchmarks and grade ranges. Each lesson is tied to at least one learning goal and uses research-based instructional strategies that support student learning. The lessons are written for the teacher, but include student-ready materials such as student sheets (student reproducibles) or E-Sheets (online worksheets that enable students to engage directly in Internet activities).

Resources

An important component of Science NetLinksis the collection of Web resources reviewed by the Science NetLinks Board of Reviewing Editors according to a rigorous set of criteria. You can select and sort these resources according to specific benchmark areas and grade ranges at the Resource Index page.

Benchmarks

To help educators integrate Science NetLinks resources into a standards-based curriculum, all site content is organized around Benchmarks for Science Literacy. These benchmarks are a set of science literacy goals developed by Project 2061, AAAS's long-term initiative to reform K-12 science education nationwide.

Science Updates

Science Updates are 90-second radio programs presenting current science research, as well as responses to questions phoned in to our Science Update hotline (1-800-WHY-ISIT). SNL's Science Update lessons include suggestions for using the research in the K-12 classroom, as well as the transcript and Real Audio file for playback.

Scrapbooking to Learn

Creating these folders motivate students to learn. A Scrapbooking Folder is a shutter folded file folder (found at office supply stores) or poster board filled with booklets. Scrapbooking to Learn is the system of designing and decorating pages or folders.

Students create booklets for each lesson in a unit. At the end of each unit, the booklets are glued to the inside of a decorated folder. You may have heard these called shutter books, pocket books, portfolders, graphic organizers, desktop projects, and other various names.

Screen it!

You certainly don't want to waste your hard-earned dollars on movies or DVDs that might contain material you'd find objectionable for yourself and/or your kids.

With the average price of a movie ticket now nearing $7, an outing with two parents and two kids starts at more than $25 (and much more for nighttime showings), without considering the added costs of popcorn and soda, parking and more.

Accordingly, a subscription to our Member Site - which costs less than one such outing - can save you lots of money over the course of a year, and eliminate the worry that your kids are going to hear or see something inappropriate.

And unlike other services, we also tell you whether a movie or DVD is any good from an artistic standpoint. After all, do you really want to spend your money on something that's poorly made or is going to bore you and your kids?

Esteemed film critic Roger Ebert named Screen It one of the top 5 most useful movie sites on the Internet and continues to recommend our service on his TV show and in his newspaper column, while the Harvard School of Public Health used our reviews in their study on movie ratings. We've been featured in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Parade Magazine, The Washington Post, and countless other publications, TV shows and radio programs, resulting in hundreds of thousands of people using our site each month as their source for informed movie reviews.

For more than ten years, ScreenIt.com has given you free information that helps you make the right entertainment choices for you, your family and loved ones.

Spell to Write and Read

Wanda Sanseri's explanation of SWR..

The term phonics simply means that the sounds of the letters
are taught. The structure, methods, and timing of doing so varies from
program to program. Most phonics programs use incomplete phonics or
phonics taught at the wrong time. Many phonics programs have faulty rules.
If you see a phonics program that has a list of words to learn by sight
alone, you know that it is an incomplete program. English has amazingly
consistent, reliable rules. Usually the programs with long list of "rule
breaker" words have rules that are not true to the language. For example,
many programs, ABeka included, teach that when two vowels go walking the
first one does the talking. In other words the rule says that if you have
a two-vowel pair (ea, ou, eu) then the first vowel will say its letter name
and the last one will be silent. This would be a great rule if English
consistently worked that way, but it does not. Although there are many
words that appear to follow this pattern, even more words fail to do so. I
consider this at best to be a worthless rule. Try to read the following
words using that rule in reference to just one of the many double vowel
pairs in English: bread, head, deaf, bear, dread, death, realm, cleanse,
health, already, heavy, feather, heaven, treachery, jealousy, meadow,
zealous, meant, treasure, endeavor, pleasant, weather, great, break, steak,
learn, earth, heard, earl, pearl, search, dearth, hearse, yearn, earth,
bureau. This is not even a complete list of words that would be an
exception to that bogus rule. None of these words would be an exception in
SWR.

Why an Adult May Need a Tutor
Many adults return to college and find they need an algebra class to either graduate or be admitted. Since many years may have passed since they were in high school, tutoring is a viable option to get a little boost. Adults have been some of my best students. They are committed to succeeding and really soak up the help.

CBEST Test! Just a continuation of the above. Many adults have now returned to college for a teacher credential. The CBEST Test is a requirement and many find the math portion difficult. I received a perfect score on the math portion and am well equipped to help you pass.

Texas TAKS Released Test

If you want to do some general testing, the Texas TAKS test have been released to the public for printing, along with answer keys.

As always, each item on the answer keys for TAKS includes the objective measured. In addition, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) student expectation is also included for each item. The objectives, which are the reporting units for each test, are consistent from year to year. However, since not all student expectations are tested each year, the specific student expectations tested may vary from one test administration to another. Some student expectations will be included each year, while others will not. The student expectations selected for a test are representative of the range of content and difficulty eligible for each objective being assessed. Some items could possibly have been classified under more than one student expectation. In such cases, educator committee members helped TEA staff reach consensus on the best alignment of an item.

Texas Tech University

K-12 students can take K-12 or dual-credit courses, apply for Credit by Examinations (CBEs), enroll in TTUISD (our K-12 diploma program), or participate in academic enrichment programs on campus. Our courses and CBEs are written to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and our elementary, middle, and high schools are accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Students can enroll in courses at any time, and have up to six months to complete coursework. Our distance learning courses are offered in a variety of formats, including online, print-based, video, and audio. Eligible high school students can earn college credit through dual-credit courses, and TTUISD students who complete the required coursework can earn a Texas high school diploma regardless of where they live. We also work with schools, school districts, and other academic organizations to supplement curriculum and offer additional educational opportunities. Through IDEAL, Texas Tech University's Institute for the Development and Enrichment of Advanced Learners, we offer non-credit, on-campus academic enrichment opportunities for school-age students. Since many of these programs have a residence hall option, they are an excellent choice for students not living in the Lubbock area to participate in hands-on academic enrichment programs on the Texas Tech campus.

Any content that fits, books, magazines, pages cut from books or magazines, sheets downloaded from the computer, or parent made sheets, may be inserted into the whiteboard/acrylic unit and traced over and over.

The Trace Erase Board, itself, motivates children to practice repetitious skills. The trace-erase process and teacher prepared materials are excellent for teaching pre-writing and pre-reading skills. If you have an interest in learning foreign languages visit this
website and sign up for the free "Word of the Day" in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese or English for Spanish Speakers. Each day, you will receive a new vocabulary word by email along with a sample sentence demonstrating how it is used in context. You will also be provided with an English translation.

This website sells foreign language programs, but they offer a number
of free activities at the site to help you learn or practice a foreign
language. The menu includes information on various languages and
cultures, along with games and quizzes to test your proficiency. If you click on "Games" on the menu, you will find a word search, word scramble, fill-in-the-blank reading comprehension game, word puzzle, vocabulary flash cards, and more. Click on any item and a new page opens. It contains the directions and allows you to select the language you want to use to play the game. Careful! These games are challenging -- and may be frustrating for those without some previous knowledge. I think they are designed to be a bit frustrating so that you will be motivated to buy the program. Nevertheless, the free Word-A-Day will supplement foreign language studies.

Univerity of Missouri Independent Study Program

The University of Missouri's Independent Study program created online courses to take advantage of the speed, storage capacity, and interactivity of the Internet. Courses integrate the traditional Study Guide with the vast resources of the Internet. Supplementary materials may include textbooks, specialized kits, audio cassettes, videotapes or CDs. Individual performance is assessed using a range of instructional techniques including essays, case studies, short answers, as well as objective questions such as multiple-choice and matching items.

Building on their natural talents, students are afforded the flexibility to progress at their own pace. Typically, students take from six weeks to nine months to complete their course work. Lesson assignments, carefully designed to build upon prior knowledge, are essential components of every course. Students succeed when they submit lessons in sequential order, allowing ample time to review lesson feedback in preparation for proctored exams. Carefully selected exam questions allow students to demonstrate what they have learned as a result of their Independent Study experience.

Accredited by: CDIS is part of the University of Missouri-Columbia, which is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the NCA-CASI—North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

"Algebra: A Complete Course"

The VideoText Learning System is more than just watching videos. The short video is filled with computer generated graphics and color sequencing, so that students learn the new concept quickly. However, we still need to have them demonstrate that knowledge, so there are four more steps to ensure that they understand and retain that knowledge. VideoText has Course Notes, a Student Work Text, Solution Manuals, Progress Tests, and Instructor's Guides, all included in each module.

Videotext easily recommends that a student begin our program in the 8th or 9th grade. Of course, if they are doing well in arithmetic, a 7th grade start would be reasonable. On the other hand 10th and 11th grade students who are struggling, will find this course extremely helpful in getting them back on track, even though they will probably be able to move through it more quickly than a younger student.

Why we call ourselves HomeUnschoolers?

Wild Animal Baby

Winter Promise

Working from the idea that literature communicates powerfully to young minds, we developed a curriculum that is strongly literature-based. This helps us offer to parents the opportunity to do less teaching and more "learning together" with their children. This "Learning Together" method has the additional benefit of requiring almost no preparation for the parent, preserving as many moments as possible for "face-to-face" time with their children.

These living, wonderful books were able to capture the imagination of children, turn them into better, curious readers, and help them to remember historical detail in a way nothing else would. In addition, we chose books, especially for our younger learners, that drew them in visually first. The graphic approach of these books also helped include kinesthetic learners, as they are able to trace maps with their fingers, find objects on the page, or search for visual clues to questions their parents asked.

Literature is marvelous, but it has its limitations, especially with hands-on learners. Thus, we add a vibrant activity set to each of our programs. These sets offer activity kits, books, and ideas to help parents introduce a hands-on aspect to the time with their children. These times create family memories and a family culture.

In our language arts, we add interesting workbooks so some of your children can be working independently while you work one-on-one in another area with another student.

In short, we've taken all of the best for you and combined it into one package. With your guidebook in hand, you have everything you need to begin a journey with your family this year that can continue for a lifetime.

It's why we say we offer you "Literature, Activities, Memories."

Come make some memories with us!

Write Guide

Free online letter writing guide!

Letter writing is a lost art. Before the days of telephones and fax machines, people wrote letters to one another using reliable pen and paper. Their letters were gracious, as well as sincere.

In an age of e-mail and fancy Internet message boards, we at WriteGuide.com feel that it's important to rekindle the tradition of communicating in a way that is more personal, more thoughtful, and ultimately more civil.

Our eight-week Letter Writing Program is designed for students ages ten and up. Working together, students learn eight essential literary devices. The Letter Writing Program is something that you must organize and evaluate for your children. It's a parent-led activity.
